An Attack on IVF is an Attack on Repro Rights

I’m an IVF baby.

It’s not something I usually have to think about–or care to. But recent developments in Alabama have forced me to reckon with that, what it means for me and what it means for my parents.\

My mom had my brother and I–twins–at age 40. She and my dad had been trying for some time with no luck, so they turned to IVF. Honestly, that’s pretty much all there is to the story. It isn’t a big deal, and no one should make it a big deal.

And yet conservatives have.

IVF is a strange battlefield. You’d think forced-birthers would be super jazzed about people having babies, right? Guess not.

Now Alabama’s legislators and now governor have signed into law a bill protecting IVF, but why was it under attack in the first place? Why have our freedoms become so eroded by these extremists?

Look, we all know this is really about abortion. Fortunately, it appears to be a massive losing battle for conservatives, so they’ve backed off IVF, but they’re still coming for abortion.

I’m not forgetting this, and neither should you. Every single time conservatives push to erode reproductive freedoms, they need to have it shoved back in their face. Virginia voters delivered them that message in 2023, but it appears they need to hear it again.

The November election is fast approaching. Once again, our reproductive rights are going to be on the ballot. We need to be sure to support those who will champion those rights rather than undermine them.
